Drunk impersonates Cop

drunkA drunk who dressed as a cop before stopping drivers on a busy road was arrested – after he flagged down a police car.

Leo McKenna drank 10 pints of lager and six double vodkas before kitting himself out in a reflective jacket, body armour, handcuffs and a baton.

He stood in Wilbraham Road, Fallowfield and flagged down motorists, before warning them of the dangers of speeding in icy conditions.

But a neighbour became suspicious after watching him stop and lecture two drivers in the early hours.

They called police, who radioed a messaged to a patrol crew in nearby Yew Tree Road.

McKenna, 44, was arrested after flagging them down.

The ex-brickie, from Sherlock Street, Fallowfield, claimed he had found the cop gear in a dustbin several years earlier.

He was charged with impersonating a police officer and possessing an offensive weapon.

He pleaded guilty at Manchester magistrates' court but escaped with a suspended sentence. Dan Weed, defending, said McKenna had meant well by his actions and 'could have been seen as a good Samaritan'.

On the night in question – December 16 – temperatures were so low that planes had been diverted from Manchester Airport.

Mr Weed said: "He was warning people about their speed and there was no threat or malice in what he did.

"It was an isolated incident.

"But alcohol clouded his judgement and he is embarrassed about his behaviour."

McKenna was given a four-month jail sentence suspended for a year and a two-month 7pm-7am curfew.

Chair of the bench Maureen Babcock told him: "This is a very serious matter and it crosses the custody threshold.

"You might have thought you were helping but you were drunk and could have caused an accident if you had stepped into the path of a car."
